Paul Tickell

Paul Tickell grew up in Carlisle.  He initially trained for the Catholic priesthood but left the seminary to attend the University of East Anglia followed by Worcester College, Oxford.  Paul worked in music publishing and band management (The Pack, Theatre of Hate etc).  This led him to a career in freelance journalism, writing for Melody Maker, NME, The Face, Time Out and Elle, amongst others.

Paul joined LWT as a researcher and later became a producer/director on South of Watford, the London Programme, Network 7 and the South Bank Show.  From there he moved into his current freelance career, directing  dramas and feature films as well as continuing to make documentaries.

Johnson’s novel by Simon Bent. Excellent reviews in Sight & Sound, The Independent, Time Out, Uncut, and the Sunday Times (“If you don’t like this, stop going to the cinema”).


CRUSH PROOF - Released 1999, a feature about a gang of feral Dublin teenagers. Screened at many festivals, including Venice. “It takes the Blarney vision of Ireland and gives it a kick in the cobblers. Champion stuff” (The Sun)


ZINKY BOYS GO UNDERGROUND - Won BAFTA Best Short Film 1995.  Written by Adisadki Tantimedh and screened at many festivals, including Telluride and Cork. It charts the violent disintegration of a gang of Afghan war veterans in St Petersburg.
